Relay Recess is a primary school initiative.

Through a Relay Recess program, your child will learn about cancer and steps they can take to reduce their risk of developing the disease and stay well. They’ll also have the chance to get out of the classroom and have fun with entertainment and activities that reinforce what they have learned in school.

Participating in the Relay Recess program benefits your child by:

• Engaging them in community service activities;
• Teaching them habits that will enable them to lead healthy lives;
• Linking their fundraising efforts to how it will make a difference in their community through CANSA services and programs;
• And unifying their school with their community for a common goal.

What is Relay Recess?

CANSA’s East Rand Community is hosting their 2nd RFL event on the 22nd – 23rd March 2013 and is aiming to raise even more than their 1st, super successful RFL event in March 2012, which raised over R1 million! This time they are aiming even higher and want to raise R1 500 000 to help those affected by cancer.

Why We Give RFL Awards

Continuous training courses were held in many communities all over South Africa for novice, as well as second-year and well-established committees. The focus is placed on the six developing areas – team, survivor, leadership, mission delivery or health education, fundraising and event development.

One of the global (including South Africa) challenges facing RFL, is to retain volunteers as committee members, ensuring continuity and maintaining the experience and skills previously developed.

The CANSA RFL awards – which were presented at the RFL Summit – are designed to recognise and applaud International Relay best practices.  CANSA and the American Cancer Society value the opportunity to formally recognise the amazing job that Relay volunteers and staff are doing and the role they play in the global fight against cancer.

With the growth of the Relay movement and more events exceeding the standards, awards were presented to the best Relay in each category in every business unit. Despite the tough economic times marked by a decline in the average financial contribution towards non-profit organisations, the hearts of people and corporate companies have remained open to help fight cancer in South Africa.

CANSA placed special emphasis on strengthening our partnerships in the corporate environment. CANSA Relay For Life remains one of the largest platforms for mobilising volunteers and public in South Africa. We thank all the staff and thousands of volunteers that worked tirelessly to make this national project successful.

CANSA Relay For Life is part of an international movement that unites cancer survivors and the communities that care about them. It offers everyone in a community, both young and old, the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to honour those who have been touched by cancer. It is an opportunity for SURVIVORS and their loved ones to fight against cancer together.

Relay For Life is a fun, overnight team event, which is volunteer-driven and community owned.

At Relay, teams of 10-15 friends, neighbours, families and co-workers commit to having at least one team member walking around the track at all times for 18-24 hours, because cancer neither slumbers nor sleeps.

The Relay For Life event opens with a heartfelt Survivors’ Lap, honouring cancer survivors and their caregivers.

After sun set, tribute is paid in a very emotive Luminaria Ceremony by lighting candles inside luminaria bags which encircle the track. These luminaria bags are dedicated to those who have the lost their battle, to those who are still fighting and to those who have won their struggle against cancer.

Teams are encouraged to raise funds in support of the fight against cancer in the region where the Relay is being held. Teams camp out overnight around the track and enjoy entertainment, fun and camaraderie in a festival-like atmosphere.

Kobus Smit is a fighter and is an advocate for Relay For Life Heroes of Hope. He lost his father, mother and eldest brother all in 1976 to three different types of cancer, but the biggest shock came when he himself was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.

Despite all of the challenges that cancer brought into Smit’s life, he became more motivated to become a dedicated volunteer for CANSA. After being diagnosed with cancer he became a spokesperson for CANSA and it made him more conscious about healthy living.

Smit is also a participant of the CANSA Relay For Life Corporate Event and walks a meaningful distance three to five mornings every week.

Kedibone Bonoko was diagnosed with Chorio carcinoma stage four at the age of 30. When the gynaecologist told her that she only had three weeks to live, she felt hopeless. Her biggest worry was the well being of her two sons.

Bonoko said that after divine intervention she decided to not let the disease rule her life. From that day on Bonoko has lived her life to the fullest.

“Even though I had lost 30kg and was very thin, I never felt so great about myself. I’ve never had a dull moment. I always kept a positive mind and attitude.”

She is now a CANSA Relay For Life Survivor, Chairperson of the Jeppe High School for Boys and the Relay For Life on Ice at Northgate. She is also helping with the daily tasks at the CANSA Office in Houghton.

Bokono is a testament to the fact that you can get your life back after having been diagnosed with cancer.
